Remove the Old Handle
Door handles are not only important for their aesthetic value to your home, but they're vital for safety since they allow you to lock and unlock your door. Over time the door handle could start to lose its grip or feel loose. It might also appear aged and worn. This is a good indication that it's time to replace the door handle.
One of the first signs that your door handle needs replacing is when it becomes difficult to operate. This is an issue because it means that you can no longer lock or unlock your door, which could create a security risk for you and your family.
Another reason to replace your door handle is if it's damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle can be quite dangerous, especially if your children or elderly family members are unable to open it and end up trapped within. Fortunately, it's fairly easy to fix a broken door handle by simply replacing the old one.
Most modern door handles are standard size, so they will fit on any door. If you are not certain that the new door handle you are buying will work, take off the old one and measure the holes in its housing. This will let you purchase the correct size door handle.
It is the easiest method to take off the old door handle by unscrewing it from the door. This is usually done using a screw driver. Some door handles come with an enclosure plate that hides the screws used to mount them. You'll need to remove the cover plate to gain access to the screws. Once you have removed the old handle, make note of the way the spindle is connected to ensure you are able to align it when you fit the new one.
You can also remove the door handle by depressing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver for removing the door handle. However, you'll have to locate the tiny latch, which is located on the edge trim piece. After you have removed the latch, remove the handle from the strike plate, and then the latch from the door edge.
The Strike Plate
When you replace your handle, you'll also need to replace the latch plate, which holds the hole that the door's latch hooks into when it closes. The package the new handles are packaged in will include two different latch plates: one that is rectangular and the other a circular one (see the diagram above for the parts of the door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, replace it with a circular one. This will allow the latch to hook into the strike plate and make the handle easier.
The first step is to remove the screw holding the latch plate. The screws can be very tight and will require some force to loosen. If possible, it may be helpful to have another person assist with this part.
After the screws are removed the latch will slide out of the door with ease. If it's stuck or won't move, use a small nail file to scratch around the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes open the plate up.
Now you can prepare the new strike plate for installation. Screw the latch plate into the door jamb using the screws that were included with the new handles. Be careful not to tighten too much the screws, as this can damage the strike plate.
If you're unsure if the latch plate is in the correct position Try closing and opening the door to see whether it locks and closes correctly. If it doesn't, you will need to adjust the strikeplate up or down, or forward or back until the door closes properly.

If the door is still moving or jiggles, then you may have to expand your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more frequent in older doors, however it could be due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are too narrow or the wrong size for the latch, or from damaged or broken strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case, use a metal filing instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.
Removing upvc replacement door handles is a bent metal piece that slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. The latch is moved forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks in an opening in the door frame to ensure that the door is closed. If your door wobbles when you close it, replacing the latch could be all that is needed to fix the problem.
It's hard to see the screws that secure the latch to the door, but there's usually a small slot on the trim plate that allows you to insert a screwdriver into the slot and take it off. After you've removed your trim plate, it should be easy to remove the latch and the bolts that keep the spindle and latch in place.
If the latch cannot be easily removed, use a paperclip or tool to take it off the handle mechanism. Place the item in the slot for the latch that is recessed. gently move it around until you feel the handle and latch begin to split. You may have to do this several times before the latch is loose enough to allow it to be pulled out.
You should be able to slide the new latch into its slot without issues once you have removed the old one. Make sure that the latch is properly positioned in the slot and lined up with the screw chambers and then use the new screws to fasten it to the strike plate and door frame.
Before you install the new handle, be certain to measure your existing backset (the distance from the center of the big hole on the front of the door to the edge). Make sure that the size of the latch of the new handle is equal to the measurement.
If you're replacing the latch or handle or handle, or if your previous lock cylinder has been damaged, then you will need a new one.
